Helping the Institute of Acoustics to grow its membership base and attract more new graduates.

The Institute of Acoustics is the UK's professional body for those working in acoustics, noise and vibration. The Institute has some 3000 members from a rich diversity of backgrounds, with engineers, scientists, educators, lawyers, occupational hygienists, architects and environmental health officers among their number.

Doing justice to itself.

The institute had achieved much since its formation. However, it was not doing justice to its heritage, and its role in industry, by the way it presented itself. There was a clear problem with attracting new younger members, and this was largely due to the institute being perceived as too inward looking and academic. The institute needed to update its website to work in a responsive format, and this created an opportunity to solve these issues.

Small changes, big difference.

Everyone was happy with the current logo and the main turquoise brand colour. The problem wasn’t so much to do with the institutes identity toolkit, but more with how the elements were being used together.

We looked at the messaging structure and tone of voice, moving the focus away from the science, and towards the human benefit of the science. In addition a new ‘sound wave’ element was introduced that worked in conjunction with more white space, and a more dynamic use of imagery.

A brighter, fresher colour palette was introduced, together with a contemporary geometric font. A series of other small changes made a big overall difference, with the institute feeling more exciting, with a greater sense of purpose and energy.
